Eli Reed is an award-winning documentary photographer with the legendary Magnum Photo Agency since 1983. Reed’s first two personal photography book project essays were, “Beirut, City of Regrets” and “Black in America” both published by W. W. Norton. He recently in May 2015, published his career retrospective “Eli Reed: A Long Walk Home,” published by the University of Texas Press, listed by the Slate website blog as being one of the Ten Best Photography Books of 2015.
He has been the recipient of the POYI World Understanding Award from for his photo essay on the Central American turmoil in1982, Lucie Award for Achievement in Documentary Photography influencing contemporary photography, World Press Award, Leica Medal of Excellence,Overseas Press Club Award, and the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard, as well as arunner-up for a Pulitzer Prize.
He has worked for numerous newspapers, magazines, foundations, television, major motion pictures and documentaries (honors for“Getting Out” video documentary on gangs in Detroit directed and filmed by Reed),and participation in too many group book projects to mention. He has continued an intensive involvement within film production projects of a fictional and documentary nature.
Presently he is a clinical professor at the Moody College of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin while continuing the pursuit of various visual documentary projects.
